To set-up a picture as your desktop background, with some browsers, you just need to click on the image with the right mouse button and select
set as wallpaper
or
set as background
. This doesn't always work well, so here are the detailed methods.
Linux Ubuntu with Gnome, or any other Linux with Gnome
Once you did save your elected picture on your hard-disk,
- Go to the menu
System/Preferences/Appearance
- Go to the tab
Background
and click the
Add
button
- A file dialog opens. Choose the path and the file name of the wallpaper image you did save previously
Linux Kubuntu with KDE, or any other Linux with KDE
Once you did save your elected picture on your hard-disk,
- Go to the
KDE control center
- Go to
Appearance & Themes/Background
- Select
Picture
and click on the
Open file dialog
button
- A file dialog opens. Choose the path and the file name of the wallpaper image you did save previously
Mac OS 8.5 or 9
Once you did save your elected wallpaper picture on your hard-disk,
- Go to the
Apple menu
and select the
Control Panel
.
- Select
Appearance
.
- Click on the
Desktop
tab.
- Click on the
Remove Picture
button to remove your old wallpaper if you already had one.
- Click on the
Select Picture
button.
- Choose the folder and the filename of the wallpaper image you did save previously.
- Click on the
Set Desktop
button and close the window.
Mac OS X
- Go to the
Apple menu
and select
System Preferences
.
- Click on
Desktop
.
- Click on the
Choose Folder
button
- Go to the folder of the wallpaper image you did save previously
- Drag the image into the screen.
Windows9x (95, 98 and ME)
Once you did save your elected wallpaper picture on your hard-disk,
- Go through the
Start button / Settings / Control Panel
and double click on
Display
- A dialog box opens. Near the top, click on the tab
Background
- In the lower half, where it is written
Wallpaper, click on the button
Browse...
on the right.
- A file dialog opens. Choose the folder and the file name of the wallpaper image you did save previously. Click
Open
.
- Back in the display dialog box, select the display mode among
Center, Tile, Stretch
.
- Click
Apply
and
OK
.
Remark: Under Win9x, you can use jpg or gif images as a desktop wallpaper if
Active Desktop is installed. If you do not want to install Active Desktop, you can only use bmp images as wallpapers. Thus you should convert your jpg images to bmp images. Therefore, open the jpg image with an image editor (e.g. The Gimp) and save it as a bmp file.
Windows XP or Vista
Once you did save your elected wallpaper picture on your hard-disk,
- Go through the
Start button / Control Panel / Appearance and Personalization
, then
Personalization
.
- Select
Desktop Background
from the list.
- Click
Browse...
to search for the wallpaper image you did save previously.
- A file dialog opens. Choose the folder and the file name of the wallpaper image you did save previously.
- Click
Open
or Double-click the image file to add it to the list of available wallpapers.
- Use the option
How should the picture be positioned
to center the wallpaper or to stretch the wallpaper all over the screen.
- Click
OK
to confirm the settings.
